1st International Conference on Stem Cells

  • When: 09/06/2012 - 09/11/2012

  • Where: Chania, Crete, Greece

  • Conference Center: Minoa Palace Conference Center

  • Stem cells, both from a basic developmental biology standpoint and with their potential in regenerative medicine applications, remain one of the most exciting and rapidly evolving fields of study in biology. Numerous studies on adult, embryonic (ES) and induced pluripotent (iPS) stem cells are ongoing to answer such still challenging questions as: What makes a stem cell a stem cell? What are the working rules of self renewal and pluripotency? Can we successfully achieve reprogramming of somatic cells and use them in regenerative medicine? How can we achieve directed differentiation of stem cells? What are the unique characteristics of cancer stem cells? Is there a best kind of stem cell for regenerative medicine applications? In spite of their recognized potential in regenerative medicine, answers to these questions are needed to advance understanding of the stem cell state and their utility in clinical applications
An atmosphere conducive to discussing and freely exchanging information on the state of knowledge and challenges in the field of stem cells will be pivotal to successfully achieving the promise of stem cells. Such open exchange, with sharing of new data and ideas, will be the prime goal of this conference, which aims to bring together a small group of scientists who are very active in the various aspects of stem cells. Participants will be expected to stimulate innovative and timely discussions that will lead to new directions and promising new studies.
